    Three Fairmont students win Ohio World Design competition
Fairmont seniors Brandon Wehner, Brian Catrine, and Bill Timmer proved themselves to be leaders on Wednesday, Feb. 17, when they beat out 49 other Ohio teams to become the winners of the Ohio Real World Design Challenge. While the competition and expectations may seem intimidating, David Lord, the students' engineering instructor, believes the students have the talent and skill necessary to bring home the national title.

    Manufacturing plant tours highlight tough times, importance of industry to state's economy
Eleven manufacturers from across the state played host to New Hampshire state legislators in a series of plant tours held in late October and early November. The tours were organized by the Business and Industry Association of New Hampshire, in partnership with the NH Department of Resources & Economic Development, to highlight the critical importance of advanced manufacturing and high technology to the state's economy, and to demonstrate the challenges facing this sector as it competes with businesses in other states and countries that have lower costs of doing business.

    Robotics competition for freshmen and sophomore engineering and engineering technology students
You are invited to participate in a great robotics competition for freshmen and sophomore engineering and engineering technology students!
The 12th Annual ASEE Model Design Competition will be held on June 21 in Louisville, KY, June 20 - June 23, 2010. This competition is open to 1st and 2nd year students at four and two year colleges and universities. This year's competition student teams will design and build a robot (Baseball Bot).

    DTMA Bots pits student-built robots against each other
The Bots contest at the Dayton Tooling and Manufacturing Association's Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Show Thursday, Oct. 23, pitted student-built robots against each other. Teams put their remote-controlled machines on an enclosed stage at the Dayton International Airport Expo Center and sought to saw, flip or otherwise crush their opponents to a metallic pulp.

    Center for Engineering & Manufacturing Excellence awards $250,000
With one in ten jobs based in manufacturing, and even more in manufacturing related areas, over 800,000 jobs or 29% of Minnesota's workforce currently supplies, builds, or designs a manufactured product. Awarded $53,947, Alexandria Technical College Customized Training Division will deliver distance-based training to over 60 technicians employed by Douglas Machine, LLC, Alexandria, MN, and Boise Paper (Boise) in International Falls. The project, titled LongWire, remotely delivers programmable logic control training on live – not simulated – industrial hardware and software. Employees are able to stay on the job site to acquire additional advanced skills.

A new annual index released June 9, 2009 by Deloitte LLP and The Manufacturing Institute shows that Americans view manufacturing as the most important industry for a strong national economy. The survey, Public Viewpoint on Manufacturing, assesses public perceptions and understanding of a wide range of issues related to manufacturing.

Since the announcement of the US National Nanotechnology Initiative in 2000, though, worldwide investment in nano research and development has raced forward, with $8 billion invested in 2004 alone.
